Svojo stisko so osebe kazale predvsem preko vedenja.

Naslov:Suicide in Youth Literature: Analysis of Imitative Behavior Factors : magistrsko delo
Opis:Suicide is a complex phenomenon that is the second biggest cause of mortality amongst youth. In the past, researches have found correlations between incautious ways the media tend to report about suicide and imitative behaviour. Therefore, many countries including Slovenia have designed guidelines and policies for responsible media coverage on suicide. Changing the ways the media report on the topic can have considerable effects on decreasing the number of suicides. Additionally, media present books that have in the past been proven to have influenced imitative behavior. Numerous researches on recognizing protective factors, risk factors and the most common barriers which prevent individuals from seeking help have been performed. The aim of this work was to research the way that books recommended by The Reading Badge for the last three-year period of primary school and for the secondary school students deal with the topic of suicide. We focused on the guidelines and policies, on protective factors and risk factors, as well as on barriers, expressing distress and on whether or not there is available information on where to seek help. We included 22 books into our research – six of them were intended for the last three-year period of primary school and the rest of them were intended for high school students. Six of them were written by Slovenian authors. We analyzed the books by isolating examples that were connected to following or alternatively not following the guidelines. We also isolated examples of risk factors and protective factors, presence of barriers and expressing distress, as well as information on where the reader could seek help. Results show that some books managed a more appropriate representation of suicide than others. Seven guidelines or policies were followed in less than half of the books in which the guidelines were possible to distinguish. The guideline that was the least followed was avoiding explicit details of suicide methods. This was followed by avoiding detailed descriptions of the location and avoiding the messages that make suicide appear to be a way of solving problems. The books were careful in picking titles and chapters titles, most of them discussed stories of people who overcame difficult times, they managed to show the grieving process, the process of treatment and the burdensome impact suicide has on the surroundings. The books contained more risk factors than protective factors. Those for the secondary school students contained more risk factors and protective factors than the books intended for the last three-year period of primary school. In all but seven books we recognized barriers that were making the search for help more difficult. Some characters spoke about their distress and some didn't. They expressed their distress with their behavior. Despite the fact that they discussed the topic of suicide, more than half of the books did not include information on where the reader could seek help. This research offers a list of books which deal with suicide, quotes which talk about suicide in an appropriate and inappropriate manner. Since all of the books did not include information on where the reader might seek help, we see this aspect as a possibility to talk about suicide more effectively.
