Title:The impact of emoticons on susceptibility to malicious messages
Abstract:The aim of this research was to highlight new social engineering tactics involving the exploitation of emojis, and to explain why critical evaluation of emails is increasingly important. The focus of the thesis is to explore the impact of psychological factors such as emotional intelligence and psychological vulnerabilities on individuals' susceptibility to social engineering, especially in the context of cyber-attacks such as phishing and smishing. Social engineering is based on the exploitation of human weaknesses and desires, whereby attackers use manipulative techniques to gain personal information or access to systems. More recently, abuse has become even more sophisticated, with the increasing use of emotional stimuli such as emojis alongside traditional techniques to give attacks a more friendly and trustworthy appearance. The results of the research show how emojis affect the perceived safety and willingness to engage of recipients, which may reduce their caution when making decisions in the digital environment. The empirical part of the thesis includes an online survey experiment that examines the impact of emoticons in malicious messages on recipients' behaviour and tests whether the use of these symbols increases the likelihood that recipients will follow the instructions of attackers. The findings show that emoticons can instil trust in recipients, increasing the chances that they will respond to malicious messages.
