Title:Motivation of older adults to participate in information and communication technology courses
Abstract:The development of information and communication technologies (ICT) has had a significant impact on modern society, with older adults often being less digitally literate, particularly in Slovenia. Understanding their motivation to engage in ICT education is crucial, as it involves emotional and psychosocial factors. Research has shown that intrinsic motivation, practical benefits, social interaction, support, adaptability, and self-confidence influence older adults' motivation to learn ICT. Despite these findings, research is often limited to small and specific samples, which affects the generalizability of the results. To address this research gap, we conducted a quantitative study among older adults in Slovenia. The study is based on a proposed theoretical model that integrates key emotional, psychosocial, and cognitive factors. This model provides insight into older adults' motivation, which is important for developing effective educational programs. The theoretical model was empirically tested. Results indicate that intellectual curiosity, defined as the desire for new knowledge and cognitive stimulation, is crucial in encouraging older adults to participate in educational programs. The model provides a better understanding of older adults' motivation for participating in ICT courses.
