V magistrskem delu smo z analizo vsebine priporočljive literature osnovnošolske Bralne značke od šolskega leta 2019/2020 do 2022/2023 v petih slovenskih osnovnih šolah preučevali prisotnost spolne stereotipizacije literarnih junakov. Ugotovili smo, da so stereotipi poenostavljena prepričanja o določeni skupini ljudi. Spolni stereotipi namreč stereotipno določajo vedenja, osebnostne karakteristike, družbene vloge in zunanji videz moških in žensk. S tujko skupek stereotipnih lastnostih žensk imenujemo femininost, moških pa maskulinost. Stereotipne feminine lastnosti žensk so skrbnost, čustvenost, plahost, ljubeznivost.

Title:Gender stereotypical characteristics of characters in the Slovenian elementary school bralna značka
Abstract:The presence of gender stereotyping in children's and young people's literature has a decisive influence on reinforcing or challenging young readers stereotypical perceptions of gender and gender roles. Through the way literary characters are portrayed in the stories that children are introduced to, a certain understanding of gender and gender roles is formed in young minds. The importance of the presence of gender stereotyping in society is that it can lead to the development of prejudice and, in some cases, violence. In this study, we examined the presence of gender stereotyping of literary characters in five Slovenian primary schools by analyzing the content of the recommended literature for the Primary School Reading Badge from the school year 2019/2020 to 2022/2023. We found that stereotypes are simplistic beliefs about a certain group of people. Gender stereotypes thus stereotype the behaviors, personality characteristics, social roles, and outward appearance of men and women. We refer to the set of stereotypical characteristics of women as femininity and those of men as masculinity. Stereotypical feminine traits of women are caring, emotional, shy and affectionate. Male stereotypical masculine traits are individuality, courage, boldness, and intelligence. The content analyses showed that it is the feminine and masculine polarity that determines the characters' position and role in the story itself. We found that gender is represented in the stories of men and women in three ways: through outward appearance, adjectives and decisions or actions. The results of the analysis of 241 literary works showed that male protagonists were more represented in literature than female protagonists and that both male and female protagonists were presented in a gender-stereotyped way. The overall content analysis showed that the content of the Reading Badge is predominantly gender stereotyped. Based on the theoretical background and empirical research, it can be concluded that children develop gender stereotypical perceptions of gender and gender roles through reading literature.
