Abstract:Magistrsko delo obravnava reprezentacijo enakosti spolov – ženskega in moškega glavnega lika v animirani risanki Čebelica Maja. Raziskovalni podatki so bili analizirani z metodo analize vsebine.

Title:Analysis of Gender Equality Representation in Maya the Bee Cartoon
Abstract:The master thesis examines the representation of the female and male main character's gender equality in Maja the Bee animated cartoon. The analysed survey sample included 78 episodes from the first season of the cartoon. The research data were analysed using the content analysis method. We have focused on the ratio of female and male characters and on the way the main characters, Maja and Vili, are presented in terms of different personality, behavioural and communication traits as well as the expression of basic emotions. We wanted to determine whether the portrayals of the main characters are gender stereotyped in these areas and to what extent. The biggest differences between genders were in the number of male and female characters, where male characters prevailed, and in the communicative qualities, where the main female character stood out in terms of the frequency of verbal expression. The results have shown that both characters represent gender balance, highlighting that both men and women are able to express a wide range of personality, behavioural, and communication traits and emotions. Vili tended to display typical female behaviour (passivity, fear, self-doubt) most of the time and was portrayed in a feminized way. Maja’s character, however, was frequently masculinised (active, courageous, expressing her opinion), which means that she frequently portrayed typical masculine behaviour. The main male character retained some typically masculine traits (insulting, boasting), while the main female character retained some typically feminine traits (affection, comforting), which created a distinction between the genders. Despite that, the cartoon implied gender equality.
