Title:A contribution to the knowledge of the repression of the new authorities in Prekmurje in the first period after the Second World War
Abstract:At the end of the war, the Communist Party took power in Yugoslavia and, among other things, carried out repression against interwar and political opponents. By analysing unpublished and published primary sources and comparing data from the relevant literature, we researched on repression and the takeover of power in Prekmurje, namely in the first post-war period in 1945. Due to its location, the province was less involved in the national liberation movement and the war. It was also the only province with a Hungarian occupier, who introduced his denationalisation policy with the goal of Hungarianizing the area. After the liberation of Prekmurje by the Soviet Red Army, the members of the Liberation Front quickly took over power, followed by a delegation of the Slovenian National Liberation Council, which consolidated the party's takeover of power. With the help of activists from other parts of Slovenia, they formed all branches of the communist government and quickly began settling accounts with their opponents. In the first weeks after the liberation, most of the members of the occupying organisations, the alleged collaborators of the occupying forces and most of the prominent personalities of pre-war Prekmurje were arrested. These individuals were then tried in a hastily formed military court, where they condemned numerous collaborations with the occupier and their property was also confiscated. Especially in the first period, the military court sentenced to death some of the most prominent figures, whose conviction and execution of the sentence were already a matter of controversy in Prekmurje at the time of the conviction and especially after Slovenia's independence. The Court of National Honour followed the military courts in July 1945, which convicted another 212 hitherto unconvicted alleged collaborators of the occupier. The convictions brought many personal tragedies not only to the convicts, but also to their relatives, who tried in every way to annul the verdicts and restore their status in society.
