Abstract:
Teorija Maier-Saupe je ena izmed najbolj uspešnih teorij na področju fizike nematskih tekočih kristalov. V magistrskem delu obravnavamo generalizacijo Maier-Saupe teorije, ki vključuje feroelektrično nematsko fazo tekočega kristala. Feroelektrično nematsko fazo v teoriji upoštevamo, da nematskemu potencialu dodamo odvisnost od polarnega ureditvenega parametra. Ustrezni potencial uporabimo pri izračunu efektivne proste energije na posamezno molekulo. V entropijskem prispevku privzamemo entropijo idealnega plina. Prosto energijo razvijemo do četrte stopnje glede na nematični in polarni ureditveni parameter, ki opisujeta urejanje sistema. Dobljen izraz vsebuje tri kvalitativno različne prispevke: člene, ki vsebujejo le ureditveni parameter polarnega reda, člene, ki vsebujejo le ureditveni parameter nepolarnega reda, in sklopljene člene, ki vsebujejo sklopljena ureditvena parametra. Dobljeni izraz preoblikujemo v brezdimenzijsko obliko. Proučimo fazno obnašanje sistema v odvisnosti od parametrov, ki opisujejo efektivni sistem, s poudarkom na vpliv sklopitvenih parametrov, ki nastopata pri sklopljenih členih.

Title:
Landau-Maier-Saupe model of the ferroelectric nematic phase
Abstract:
The Maier-Saupe theory is one of the most successful theories in the field of nematic liquid crystal physics. In this thesis we discuss a generalisation of the Maier-Saupe theory involving the ferroelectric nematic phase of the liquid crystal. The ferroelectric nematic phase is considered in the theory by adding a dependence on the polar ordering parameter to the nematic potential. The corresponding potential is used to calculate the effective free energy per molecule. In the entropy contribution we assume the entropy of an ideal gas. The free energy is developed to the fourth power with respect to the nematic and polar ordering parameters, which describe the ordering of the system. The resulting expression contains three qualitatively different contributions: terms containing only the polar order ordering parameter, terms containing only the non-polar order ordering parameter, and coupled terms containing the coupled ordering parameters. The resulting expression is transformed into dimensionless form. We study the phase behaviour of the system as a function of the parameters describing the effective system, focusing on the influence of the coupling parameters appearing in the coupled terms.
