Abstract:Povzetek Prehrana vpliva na zdravje človeka v vseh življenjskih obdobjih.

Title:The use of dietary supplements among residents in retirement homes in pomurje
Abstract:Abstract Dietary habits influence a person’s health throughout all stages of life. One must be especially careful with their diet later in life as advanced age is often accompanied by disease. People like to treat smaller problems with alternative methods that include dietary supplements which due to the widespread belief of their purely positive effects have recently gained recognition. The purpose of the research was to find out how often and which dietary supplements are consumed by residents in retirement homes in Pomurje. We used the quantitative research method using an anonymous questionnaire. 109 elderly people inhabiting two retirement homes in Pomurje took part in the survey. Our research revealed that 99,1% of the elderly living in retirement homes use dietary supplements (vitamin D3) which were prescribed by a physician. The research showed that they are relatively well acquainted with possible side effects, however they do not know when to stop taking the supplements. We have also proven that there is no correlation between education and the frequency of dietary supplement use among residents of retirement homes for the elderly in Pomurje. The covid-19 pandemic increased the usage of dietary supplements among the elderly population. It is important to further educate health professionals and consumers about the safe use of dietary supplements, possible side effects and where to seek treatment in such cases. Furthermore, we find it imperative to educate the general population about safe use of dietary supplements.
