Title:Checking the appropriateness of texts for easy reading with the help of an application
Abstract:Understanding texts is crucial for acquiring new information, so it is important to adapt the text to the current level of knowledge of the reader. For easier understanding, we use easy reading methods and processes to simplify information. Comprehension can be checked according to different difficulty rating scales and according to existing solutions (Besana, WebFX, Readable, Word Counter and Wordcounter.net) in the field of text analysis. The selected methods (text comprehension according to Flesch, Coleman-Liau index, SMOG comprehensibility measure and automated readability index (ARI)) were implemented in an android application following the example of existing solutions, which allows immediate verification of the difficulty of text texts by manual input or with more advanced two ways of entering text, i.e. by analyzing the camera image or by analyzing the selected image from the gallery. To check the performance, excerpts from the text of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet from the English and Slovenian integral versions and their easy-to-read adaptations were analyzed. The results of the analysis of all four texts showed significant differences in the length of sentences, the number of sentences, the length of words and the number of words, which confirms that the developed solution detects differences between the texts and the obtained results are within the expected intervals of the selected methods.
