Title:Fandoms on social networks: an analysis of Taylor Swift and Swifties
Abstract:Technological advances have had a profound impact on fan culture, how it works and how it is perceived in society. Fan communities or fandoms have moved in large numbers to the digital environment, where they emerge and develop spontaneously and organically. Web 2.0 is a particularly important turning point, as its interactivity enables and encourages participatory culture. The thesis presents how fans communicate and connect on social networks, as a result of a literature review and a three-part empirical study, focusing on the analysis of a specific case - Taylor Swift and her fans, Swifties. We found that fans use social networks not only to stay informed about current events and to interact with the celebrity but also to communicate with other fans and to share their own content.
Keywords:fandoms, social networks, fan culture, parasocial relationships, participatory culture
