Abstract:
Porabi veliko količino vode in odlaga industrijske odpadne voda, kar dodatno onesnažuje vodo in tla v bližini le-teh.

Title:
Ecological-criminologigal aspects of fast fashion
Abstract:
As the third largest industry in the world, fast fashion has many harmful effects on the environment and society. Its mass production and transportation contribute more annual greenhouse gas emissions than international air and maritime transport combined. The use of synthetic or artificial materials that pollute the environment with microplastics is problematic. It consumes a large amount of water and disposes of industrial wastewater, which further pollutes the water and soil near it. There are too many clothes in the world, waste clothes made of synthetic materials do not decompose quickly, release greenhouse gases and poison the soil and riverbeds. Non-organic extraction of materials is also a big problem, as various types of pesticides destroy fertile soil, shrink forests, and contaminate lakes. These chemicals also remain in clothes, which later come into contact with factory workers and our skin, which has an extremely negative effect on our health. To produce large quantities of clothing as cheaply as possible, fashion brands do not bother with ecological and ethical practices. Many brands thus move the production of products and hire external contractors in other countries, which are not too strict in controlling the working conditions for workers and producers and in the legislation for environmental protection. They use cheap labor, often “employed” in textile factories or sweatshops, where their rights are violated daily (they work long hours and in bad and dangerous working conditions for extremely low pay). The central topic of the master's thesis is ecological-criminological aspects of the fashion industry, with special attention to the phenomenon of fast fashion. We deal with the abuse and exploitation of workers and violations of their rights in the process of fast fashion production, as well as environmental pollution and the consequences of this pollution on people. We also analyzed the connection of ecological damage of fast fashion with corporate ecological crime and ecological criminology and critical criminology. The aim of the master's thesis was to highlight the harmful effects that fast fashion has on people and the environment. Social and ecological damage is unevenly distributed around the world, its biggest perpetrators are corporations, and we consumers are complicit in this. They must develop tools for a better balance between production and consumption, as well as strategies to increase the social and environmental responsibility of producers and consumers.
