Abstract:Vzgojno-izobraževalne institucije v zadnjih letih beležijo velik porast etnične raznovrstnosti oddelčnih skupnosti.

Title:Classroom ethnic diversity and aspects of the students ethnicity as factors of bullying
Abstract:In recent years, educational institutions have been experiencing a significant increase in ethnic diversity within classroom communities. One of the main research trends in the field of classroom ethnic diversity is exploring its connection to bullying involvement. The purpose of this study was to explore relationships between ethnicity-based factors at the student and classroom level (i.e., ethnic status, perceived difference of the foreign ethnic group, classroom ethnic diversity) and bullying involvement (i.e., bullying victimization and perpetration). Additionally, the study aimed to examine the interaction effects of the proposed relationships with other individual (i.e., social goals, academic engagement, perceived peer support) and contextual factors (i.e., classroom moral disengagement). In the first part of the study, a battery of questionnaires was administered to 6,391 participants (87.6% ethnic majority group members), including the Adolescent Peer Relations Instrument - Bully/Target (APRI-BT), Moral Disengagement in Peer Victimization Scale, Social Status Goals and Social Status Insecurity Questionnaire, Perceived Peer Support Scale and Behavioural and Cognitive Engagement in School Scale. In the second part of the study, 253 participants (88.1% ethnic majority group members) completed the Perceived Difference of Foreign Ethnic Groups Questionnaire. Results of multilevel modeling indicated that classroom ethnic diversity was a positive predictor of bullying perpetration. Results also showed that there was a statistically significant interaction effect of student's ethnic status and classroom ethnic diversity on bullying perpetration. Additionally, the interaction effects of classroom ethnic diversity and classroom moral disengagement on bullying involvement proved to be statistically significant. Among ethnic minority students, a statistically significant interaction effect of classroom ethnic diversity and perceived peer support was also found. This study is one of the first to examine ethnicity-based variables on a large and representative sample while also taking into account the complexity of relationships between variables by incorporating numerous individual and contextual factors. The presented findings have practical implications for reducing student bullying involvement within ethnically diverse classrooms while also providing guidelines for reducing the victimization of ethnic minority students within ethnically homogeneous classrooms.
