Title:Public opinion of police work in Slovenia during the COVID-19 epidemic
Abstract:In the last three years, we have witnessed a lot of new changes that seemed almost or utterly impossible in the past. We were forced to adopt new, previously unknown known habits. The new reality subsequently brought disagreements and, as a result, a deterioration or lack of trust in state institutions and security measures taken by the government. The Master's thesis presents research that was carried out using a questionnaire by the authors Maskály et al. (2021) entitled “Police Organizational Changes During the Global COVID-19 Pandemic”. The 1ka tool was used for data collection and processing. The thesis includes, among other things, an overview of the stress experienced by civil servants of the police when performing police duties during the COVID-19 epidemic, trust or distrust in government measures and the COVID-19 epidemic in Slovenia, where several analyses were made from the perspective of protests against the government measures in Slovenia. Based on the analyses, measures were listed to improve public opinion on the operation of the Slovenian police. The hypotheses were tested with two multiple regression analyses and one simple linear regression analysis. Among other things, I was interested in which factors are associated with compliance with government measures to curb the epidemic coronavirus disease. The results indicated that willingness to comply with laws and other regulations related to measures to curb the epidemic due to the new coronavirus is related to public trust in the operation of the police, to the successful coping of the police with the challenges of the epidemic, and the public's respect for the police. The thesis provides an answer to the research question concluding that self-protective measures, which include wearing a protective mask, the public's favourable opinion of the police, and the visibility of police officers in the neighbourhood, influence compliance and adherence to measures. Based on the analyses and literature review, measures are proposed to improve communication from the police organization to employees and their effects, which significantly impact public opinion towards the police.
