Title:Optimizacija geotermalne elektrarne v El Salvadorju z ozirom na termodinamiko in rudarjenje Bitcoina : magistrsko delo

Abstract:V okviru magistrske naloge smo analizirali delovanje geotermalne elektrarne, natančneje uporabo organskega Rankinovega cikla za izkoriščenje geotermalne energije. Magistrska naloga je osnovana na realnem primeru geotermalne elektrarne v El Salvadorju. V magistrski nalogi smo zasnovali ORC sistem iz vidika termodinamike in s programom Matlab optimizirali maksimalni in minimalni tlak sistema ter njegovo maksimalno temperaturo. Poskušali smo najti najučinkovitejšo delovno tekočino, ki bo omogočila maksimalno učinkovitost sistema. Rezultate pridobljene s pomočjo Matlaba smo validirali s programoma Aspen Plus in DWSIM. Kot rezultat optimizacije in validacije smo ugotovili, da so najučinkovitejše delovne tekočine za zasnovo ORC sistema n-butan, R245fa in izobutan. Vse tri delovne tekočine so varne, imajo nizek potencial globalnega segrevanja in ničen potencial tanjšanja ozona. Povprečna učinkovitost ORC sistema, dobljena z njihovo uporabo, je znašala malo več kot 12 %. Hipotetični primer uporabe geotermalne elektrarne v El Salvadorju smo predpostavili z namenom rudarjenja kriptovalute Bitcoin. Za izračune smo ustvarili matematične funkcije predvidevanja cene in težavnosti rudarjenja do leta 2050. Ugotovili smo, da bi bil tovrsten projekt izvedljiv in profitabilen.

Title:Optimization of El Salvador geothermal power plant with respect to thermodynamics and Bitcoin mining
Abstract:As part of the master's thesis, we analyzed the operation of the geothermal power plant, more specifically the use of organic Rankin cycle system. The master's thesis is based on the real case of a geothermal power plant in El Salvador. ORC system was designed in terms of thermodynamics and optimized for the maximum and the minimum pressure alongside its maximum temperature. Optimization was carried out with Matlab program. Aim was to find the most effective working fluid that will result in the maximum efficiency of the system. Results obtained with the help of Matlab were validated with Aspen Plus and DWSIM programs. As a result of optimization and validation, it was found that the most effective working fluids are n-butane, R245fa and isobutane. All three working fluids are safe, have low global warming potential and zero ozone depletion potential. The average efficiency of the ORC system obtained by their use was just over 12%. Hypothetical example of using a geothermal power plant in El Salvador solely for the purpose of mining the Bitcoin cryptocurrency was proposed and analysed. For the calculations mathematical functions were created to predict the price and difficulty of mining until 2050. It was concluded that such a project would be feasible and profitable.
