Title:Healthcare waste management during the covid-19 pandemic
Abstract:Improper management of healthcare waste can have a negative impact on patients, healthcare workers, the environment and the people who dispose of it. Healthcare providers in hospitals are even more exposed to occupational infections, so they must have the appropriate and correct knowledge and practice. This thesis investigates the management of healthcare waste during the COVID-19 pandemic. We conducted a systematic literature review using the PRISMA method of review, analysis, synthesis and compilation. Articles were searched using a composite search string in the following databases: CINAHL, Medline and PubMed. The articles selected based on the search string were then critically appraised using the Joanna Briggs Institutes tool, analysed, and synthesised results. The results of our surveys showed that health workers' knowledge and awareness of infection control protocols, the procedure for handling SARS-CoV-19-infected waste, and the available infection control resources are mostly influenced by gender, education, and work experience. Incineration has proven to be the best way to dispose of healthcare waste, but the increase in hazardous emissions from incinerators into the environment must be taken into account.Healthcare professionals are not only involved in treating patients but also play a major role in waste management. Most studies have shown that healthy waste is incinerated. However, they also use recycling, autoclaving, sterilisation, physical recovery and energy conversion methods.
