Title:Developing natural science and digital competences with the bbc micro:bit
Abstract:Planning primary school physics experiments can be a great challenge, if we are interested in the appropriate complexity and efficiency of implementation. We can use the tools and aids, as we can support, for example, complex physical experiments with various computer animations, videos and simulations. We believe that the development of science literacy, science competences and the connection of physical phenomena with everyday life is also crucial in physics experiments. In addition to strengthening science literacy, we must not forget the digital competences that students should acquire in each subject. In the master's thesis we present the development of natural and digital competencies through physical computing using the BBC Micro:bit microcontroller. We first present the purpose and examples of experimental work in the teaching of primary school physics with an emphasis on physical computing. We then present a collection of exercises that we first piloted with ninth-graders and, based on the results, improved for central testing. Finally, we present the results regarding the effectiveness of the collection of exercises and the consideration of possible inclusion in physics lessons. The results show that the collection of exercises is effective. However, a more in-depth analysis would be needed regarding the optimal inclusion of the collection of experiments in the compulsory subject of physics due to time constraints.
