Abstract:

Title:
Development of an instrument for predicting information security behavior
Abstract:
In the master's thesis we focused on the development of an instrument for predicting information security behavior. Since human is the end user of information technology, which he uses for either personal or business use, understanding human behavior is key to preventing information security incidents. For the successful operation of the organization, with the expansion of technology and digitalization of processes, it is more important than ever that the management as well as every single employee is aware of the importance of information security. Organizations, however, are not the only target of information security attacks, as cybercrime is not the victim’s choice. For this reason, we have formed the instrument to be suitable for measuring the level of safe behavior of each user. We drew the idea from gauges and approaches that are already established through theory and practice. We transformed the findings to develop new instrument which validity and reliability were our primary interest, as well as whether there are differences between the approach of classic questions on the one hand and scenarios on the other. Statistical tests mostly showed excellent values of reliability and validity of the measuring instrument, which means that it is possible to measure the set of theoretical constructs with presented questions. According to the measurement approaches, the respondents' responses reflected a tendency to »correct« answers, although when presented with real life cases they answered differently. That does not apply to the field of e-mail and internet use, which received above average attention and caution, according to the survey results. For predicting general information security behavior our instrument would need to be redesigned, as the original form predicts general information security behavior only based on both measurement approaches with social media use and protection motivation regarding e-mail use and incident response. Theoretical constructs of remaining areas should be adapted with their reliability and validity values re-established.
