Title:Influence of external factors on patient satisfaction with emergency treatment.
Abstract:Numerous internal and external factors have an impact on patients and their satisfaction with treatment before, during and after their treatment. The aim of this master's thesis was to determine how external factors affect patient satisfaction with treatment provided in the emergency surgical unit of the University Medical Centre Ljubljana. This master's thesis used a survey which has been conducted for several years in the emergency surgical unit. Data from three different periods were compared: the period with obsolete equipment, the period with temporary, improvised equipment and the period with new and modern equipment. The thesis examined what impact equipment and related treatment have on patient satisfaction. No significant difference (p = 0.077) was determined between satisfaction assessment of patients treated with old equipment compared to satisfaction assessment of patients treated with new and modern equipment. However, the thesis does confirm the hypothesis saying that patients who were made aware of estimated treatment waiting time are more satisfied than those who were not informed about that and that patients who had received enough information about their condition before they had left the hospital were also more satisfied than those who had been deprived of that information. The best result of health treatment is satisfied patients. Before, during and after treatment, patients are affected both by internal and external factors. Patient satisfaction with treatment can be increased by informing patients about their treatment appointment as well as their treatment and actions to take when they leave the hospital. Patients who know whom to ask for help are more satisfied.
