Abstract:Pri prevajanju velja, da obstaja toliko različnih prevodov, kolikor je prevajalcev istega besedila.

Title:Retranslation: Comparison of Two Slovene Translations of Francis Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby (Case Study)
Abstract:There are as many different translations as there are translators of the same text. Various factors contribute to differences in translations of the same texts; however, the purpose of this thesis is to present the concept of retranslation of literary texts. The need or desire to meet the requirements that the existing translation no longer meets, or does not fully meet, is often the reason for a retranslation. This is usually due to changes in cultural norms. However, retranslations can also be influenced by translation norms and strategies, the political background and the standardisation of language. Based on the analysed material from Francis Scott Fitzgerald's novel The Great Gatsby, and the two respective translations of it into Slovene, the aim of this thesis will be to try to determine to what extent the translations differ. Different theories and models of translation strategies will be presented in the theoretical part. The taxonomy of microstrategies proposed by Anne Schjoldager will be used for the analysis. The thesis will further test the Retranslation hypothesis, which argues that domestication procedures are used more frequently in first translations in order to bring the translation closer to the target readers, in comparison to newer translations which tend to be more source oriented in order to maintain the foreignness of the original. Based on the results of the analysis, a comparison of the level of creativity between the two translations will be carried out as well.
