Abstract:
Magistrsko delo prikazuje raziskavo o optimizaciji postopkov končne obdelave pigmenta titanovega dioksida. Uspešnost površinske obdelave in morfologijo delcev TiO2 smo določili s pomočjo presevne in vrstične mikroskopije. Optične lastnosti pigmentov TiO2 smo določali z metodami določevanja efektivnosti sipanja svetlobe, opacitete, podtona in sijaja v tiskarskih barvah. Kontrolirana anorganska površinska obdelava (pH in temperatura) z aluminijem zmanjša porazdelitev velikosti delcev TiO2 in izboljša sposobnost dispergiranja delcev TiO2 v vodi.

Title:
Optimization of finishing processes in TiO2 pigment production
Abstract:
The master's thesis presents research on the optimization of titanium dioxide pigment finishing processes. The main focus is on the optimization of wetting processes and on processes of inorganic and organic surface treatments of pigments for the use in printing inks. The size of TiO2 pigments is usually somewhere between 150 and 300 nm, but the particles readily agglomerate in aqueous media, depending on the pH of the suspension and the use of surfactants. In order to achieve the best printing inks, it is necessary to prevent agglomeration. To this end, wetting and surface treatment operations must be carried out under controlled conditions. In the research we found out that lowering the pH of the calcinate suspension increases the formation of agglomerates of TiO2 particles. Furthermore the influence of various surfactants that improve the dispersibility in the wetting process was also examined. Inorganic surface treatment was performed with Al2O3, the source of which were the precursors NaAlO2 and Al2(SO4)3. It has been observed, what is the influence of controlled and uncontrolled process conditions on inorganic surface treatment and what are the differences obtained if only sodium aluminate or both, sodium aluminate and aluminium sulphate are used. Organic surface treatment was performed with various surfactants. The efficiency of surface treatment and morphology of TiO2 particles were determined by transmission and scanning microscopy. Changes in the electrochemical properties of TiO2 particles were determined using the apparatus for measuring the zeta potential. The size and size distribution of the pigment particles were also monitored. The optical properties of TiO2 pigments were determined by using methods for determining the light scattering efficiency, opacity, undertone and gloss in printing inks. Controlled inorganic surface treatment (pH and temperature) with aluminium reduces the size distribution of TiO2 particles and improves the ability to disperse TiO2 particles in water. In the process of organic surface treatment, we improved the surface tension of the pigment TiO2, the dispersibility of the pigment in water and the optical properties of the pigment in printing inks by using certain modifiers.
