Title:Sustainable use of micro mobility in a small municipality
Abstract:Within the context of this assignment, we describe the problem, which many cities are facing with in the field of public transportation. These can differentiate entirely amongst individual cities. Some cities are searching for ways of alleviating existing public transportation methods, whilst others search for a solution to the so called “last mile” problem. We overview different implementation methods of micro mobility services – in the form of stand-alone solution, or in the form of integrating and expanding existing public transportation systems. We classify which methods of transportation fall under the term of micro mobility and describe the most common transportation methods chosen for use in an urban environment (smart electric scooters and smart bicycles). We shall describe the advantages and disadvantages of such methods of transportation and the effects they have on their environment. In the practical part, we shall describe the operations of a micro mobility service in the small city of Šentjur. The described service is a public smart bicycle rental system. We shall describe the challenges which the city is facing in the field of their existing traffic system and how it influences the local population. We shall dive into development plans of both the city itself alongside the entire region and describe, how a new micro mobility service fits within these plans. As such, we shall take a dive into the inner workings of the public bicycle rental system – KolesCE. We shall describe the registration procedure, rental procedure, user experience and locations of borrowing stations in the city of Šentjur. We shall also briefly describe the workings of this very system in other nearby places, such as the city of Celje. Finally, we dive into the operating statistics of the service KolesCE in the city of Šentjur and analyze various metrics, which we’ve received from the service provider.
