Title:Children’s Drawing and Attachment to Teachers in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder
Abstract:The thesis discusses the link between symbols in children's drawings and attachment of children with autism spectrum disorder to their teachers. The theoretical part focuses on the characteristics of autism spectrum disorder, the significance and the types of attachment and on the development of children’s drawing. 120 children and their teachers participated in the research, more than half of the children have autism spectrum disorder. We determined the type of attachment to their teacher for every child according to the Child-Teacher Relationship Scale and then compared that result to criteria for evaluating drawings titled My teacher and I. We set the criteria based on the symbols that have shown to be good indicators of attachment styles in other researches and on the symbols that often appeared in our drawings. The results show that children with autism spectrum disorder have a delay in drawing process and development and are less likely to have a secure relationship with their teachers. We confirmed that most children develop secure types of attachment to their teachers and determined, that links between symbols in drawings and attachment exist.
