Title:Motivation of Adult Choir Singers
Abstract:The conductor as the main figure of a choir is the main factor for success as well as failure of a choir. The conductor ensures that the singers feel well and that they have healthy social relationships with each other. He must be adaptable, communicative, trustworthy, empathetic, and authoritative, furthermore, he must be capable of teamwork and collaboration. His duty is creating proper and clearly defined goals, finding appropriate pieces of music, and resolving potential conflicts. The empirical part of the master’s thesis consists of two separate researches. In the first one 128 conductors were involved, in the second 294 choir singers. We were interested in seeing how both groups view motivation and complementing elements of it. in this regard, we questioned both groups on conductor competence, feedback, and motivational factors, moreover, we asked the singers about the beneficial influences of singing on their lives, their fears, and reasons for quitting a choir. Our research has shown that motivation is closely intertwined with conductor competence and regular constructive feedback. The beneficial influences of singing show themselves as greater social connection and healthier mental and physical wellbeing.
