Title:Use of the likert scale in information securuty research
Abstract:The Likert scale is one of the most used (or even abused) measuring instruments in social science research. Research that has so far focused on the Likert scale and the naming of anchors has primarily examined mean values, values without word labels and the difference between different scale levels. In the literature, however, to the best of our knowledge, we have not found a study about words as extreme values. Given the absence of the empirical research on which phrases are most appropriate in Slovene language as extreme values in the Likert scale, in this research we used an experiment. Online environment 1ka.si randomly classified the respondents into two groups, which received two identical surveys on the smartphone security. Survey’s constructs were based on the protection motivation theory. The difference between both surveys were the phrases of outliners on the Likert scale. Half of the respondents were given questions to which they were answering with the values from 1 - “I strongly disagree”, 2 - “I disagree”, 3 - “I am neutral”, 4 - “I agree” to 5 - "I strongly agree". The other half of the respondents received a scale with values of 1 - "I do not agree at all" and 5 - "I completely agree". We found small differences in arithmetic means and variability of constructs of the protection motivation theory between both groups, but far too little to apply the results to the entire population. Both variants of the Likert scale are evenly appropriate to use in surveys related to the information security. We also discovered that perceived vulnerability, perceived severity, response efficacy and self-efficacy are positively connected with security intentions in conjunction with the user’s perception of smartphone security.
