Title:The influence of on- screen digital media on the reading motivation of 4th grade students - generation alpha
Abstract:The master thesis with the title “The influence of on-screen digital media on the reading motivation of 4th grade students – Generation Alpha” is comprised of two parts - a theoretical and an empirical part. In the theoretical part of our master thesis, we focused on important findings regarding reading, as well as reading motivation and acquiring the skill of reading in a digital era. In addition, we also provided detailed information about a new generation of children, which some call Homo zappiens. We also presented the Stavanger Declaration and the National Strategy for the Development of Reading Literacy. In the empirical part of our master thesis, we provide the research results, in which we presented how digitalization and rapid development of technology affects the reading motivation of 4th grade students. The results were acquired with the Reading motivation questionnaire for young students. The gained results were then compared with the results, which were acquired with the same questionnaire in 2006. With the obtained results, we reached the conclusion that digitalization has a negative effect on the reading motivation of students. Results from each one of the three parts (reading interest, perception of reading as a difficult activity, loud reading competence) were lower as the results from the students in 2006.
