Abstract:

Title:
Impact of vegetarian diet in pregnancy
Abstract:
Vegetarianism is a broad term that covers many subgroups of different diets that are divided according to the inclusion of foods in the diet. In recent decades, more young people are opting for such forms of nutrition for a variety of reasons. Pregnant women become a particularly vulnerable group, as a woman in gestation must achieve her energy needs and the needs of her child. The intention of the final work was to investigate how vegetarian diet of a pregnant woman affects the course of pregnancy and the development of her fetus. We performed a review, analysis and synthesis of domestic and foreign literature related to vegetarian diet during pregnancy and its effects on the course of pregnancy and fetal development. We used a descriptive research method. We followed the PRISMA recommendations. We found out that improperly composed vegetarian diets represent a problem, where nutrient deficiencies such as vitamin B12, D, zinc, iodine, iron, calcium and omega-3 fatty acids often occur. Lack of key nutrients leads to many complications during pregnancy as well as various health problems later in the lives of the children of vegetarian mothers. By limiting food intake, the risk of macro and micronutrient deficiencies increases. Lacto – ovo – vegetarian diet during pregnancy has proven to be safe by following the recommendations and planning menus. Research shows that pregnancy outcomes in a balanced vegetarian diet are comparable to an omnivorous diet.
