Abstract:

Title:
Knowledge and techniques for using inhalation devices among copd patients
Abstract:
Introduction: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a common irreversible and progressive obstructive ventilation disorder. Inhalers are often used to treat COPD, so we presented COPD in this Master's thesis and investigated how well are patients familiar with inhalers and their proper use. Methods: Questionnaire as a quantitative research method was applied and included and the study included 40 patients with COPD in one of the internal medicine clinics for pulmonary and allergic diseases. The collected data were processed using computer programs Microsoft Office Word 2016 and Microsoft Office Excel 2016 and IBM SPSS Statistics 25. We used descriptive statistical methods. Results: The results of the study revealed that 40 % of patients smoke and that all surveyed patients have been prescribed an inhalation drug. 55 % of patients are not familiarized with the side effects of the drug. Patients are not familiarized with the proper use of inhalers and inhalation techniques. Nevertheless, they are satisfied (65 %) with their prescribed medicine (inhaler, packaging, handling method). Discussion and conclusion: The research shows that there are many types of inhalers containing different substances, so it is essential to instruct the patient before the first use and perform interim tests on proper handling. The entire interdisciplinary team should be involved.
