Title:Professional Swimming in Slovenia and Doping
Abstract:The master's thesis presents a specific view of top swimming in Slovenia in correlation to doping. In the desire to achieve top results, an increase in the use of doping has been noted in the recent period, both around the world and in Slovenia. Doping is one of the greatest challenges in the world of top sport. In the theoretical part of the master's thesis, the definitions of doping, illicit substances and procedures in sports, the procedure of doping control and adjoined penalties as well as the activities in the field of doping prevention, are presented. This is followed by doping cases of Slovenian athletes from various sports disciplines and the most resounding examples of doping cases in the world of top swimming, both globally and at European and Slovenian level. Recently, the Chinese swimmer Sun Yang, as well as many other successful swimmers, have drawn a lot of unwanted attention in connection with doping. The most important part of the master's thesis is the empirical part, which is based on the qualitative analysis of directed interviews conducted with people correlated to top swimming in one way or another. Based on the information gathered through interviews, it was determined that doping is not widespread in the Slovenian swimming discipline, while its use is much more common among swimmers around the world. It has been concluded that it is possible to achieve top performance without doping. In order to prevent doping more effectively, more frequent controls, stricter penalties and regular awareness-raising of young athletes about the dangers of doping should be introduced, as it has proven to be fatal at certain occasions.
