Abstract:Nezakonita preprodaja živalskih vrst v Evropski uniji nakazuje na dolgo trajajočo problematiko sodobne družbe v kateri živimo. Najpogosteje preprodajane živalske vrste so plazilci, ptiči in primati (opice).

Title:Wildlife trafficking in european union
Abstract:Illegal wildlife trade in the European Union points out to the long-lasting problems of modern society. It includes the entire procedure from poaching, trade, smuggling, and sales. Wildlife trade threatens animal species as it negatively affects the number of individual species, as well as the habitat and biodiversity of the environment from which animals are being taken. Organized criminal groups involved in this type of crime play a crucial role in the illegal trade of animal species, profits for these types of crimes are high due to low awareness and low levels of priorities in law enforcement agencies. Trafficked animals are used for many different purposes, such as the use of animal products in traditional medicine, the use of skins in the fashion industry, as showpieces, or as pet animals. Many trafficked animals and their products in the black market are considered exotic or luxury products, which are highly valued. Organized criminal groups make good use of this high demand and turning it to huge profits. Most trafficked animal species are reptiles, birds, and primates (monkeys), because of their characteristics or body parts which are most commonly used for various purposes all around the world. The main actors in export, transit, and import are countries with high regional biodiversity or regions that serve as a transit point between different regions. These include the European Union, Africa, Asia, and the Americas, which act like export, transit, or import regions concerning others for different animal species and products. The CITES convention which controls international trade in endangered species, as well as other non-government organizations for protecting wildlife from overexploitation and extinction, plays a very important role. The primary solution for the conservation of endangered wildlife species is better education to detect wildlife smuggling in the land, air, and sea borders and checkpoints in the European Union and other parts of the world. Higher sanctions for criminals and higher awareness of existing problems.
