Abstract:

Title:
Use of transformational leadership style in nursing
Abstract:
Introduction: Knowledge of leadership styles in nursing and their application in practice is important both for nursing employees and for the organization in which they work. The purpose of the study was to determine the benefits of using a transformational leadership style in nursing. Methods: A review of the scientific and professional literature in the CINAHL, PubMed and Medline bibliographic databases published between 2009 and 2019 was performed. The advanced search was conducted with a combination of the following keywords: “nurs *” and “transformational leadership”. The identified hits were ranked according to the hierarchy of evidence and the collected data were synthesized using the content analysis method. Results: Out of 454 identified hits, 34 were included in the final analysis. The findings were classified into the category “Positive effects of using a transformational leadership style in nursing”, which includes three related subcategories: (1) “for the patient”, (2 ) "for employees" and (3) "for the organization". In most cases, the authors of the research agree that the use of a transformational leadership style motivates nurses to perform quality nursing care, to achieve collective goals, which is also related to organizational results. Discussion and conclusion: Nurses' satisfaction with the workplace is a key element in keeping nurses in the workplace. There has been a greater retention of nurses in the workplace and a reduction in the chances of their burnout when nursing leaders resort to a transformational leadership style. As nurses are at the forefront of implementing change, as health services are constantly changing and the demand for nursing is increasing, it is particularly advisable to encourage the use of a transformational leadership style.
