Abstract:

Title:
Drawing as transition from mimetic to the immaterial
Abstract:
The master thesis consists of two parts: theoretical and practical. In both parts, we address the sketch as a transition from mimetic artistic reality to non-objective expression. In the practical part, we have taken on a challenge to clearly demonstrate the process of a personal sketching experience that has led us from the subject and observed experience through stylization, reduction and abstraction process to a more non-subject or abstract expression. The first, theoretical part, is based on a sketch research, where we define its function. Through history and to this day, the sketch remains a fundamental basis of every art expression and is present in all art techniques. A sketch can be an independent work or can have a function of preparation for further work. We have researched what kind of role did a sketch have in the past in fine arts and how its role has changed through history. In the master thesis, we defined the types of sketches, as well as artistic elements that help us with evaluating the sketch and recognizing its message. Mimetic image was based on imitation and changed through different historical periods. For example, in the renaissance period it was known that the art only imitates beautiful reality. Artists also captured personal expression and emotions, thus emphasizing what is hidden in nature. In the master thesis, we also focused on those drawing images, where you can see the transition from the world of object representations to the area of intangible and abstract expression. Therefore, we included the analysis of artwork of Pablo Picasso, Vasilij Kandinski and Piet Mondrian in our research part, as well as abstraction procedures that they used in their creative work.
