Title:Effects of practice on proper pronaunciation while reading out loud
Abstract:Dialects greatly affect proper pronunciation. Each dialect and each regional colloquial have their own characteristics, which remain largely unnoticed by speakers – what is more, we even subconsciously incorporate them when reading out loud properly or when we speak freely in formal register. This is the reason why this thesis focuses on the question whether it is possible to stop deviating from proper pronunciation when reading if given enough practice. We performed reading tests in two 7th grade elementary school classes in a Maribor elementary school. We used one of the classes as an experimental class, where we performed 10 exercises in orthoepy. Afterwards, we performed the reading exercises again, which showed a difference in the control class and experimental class. With the help of the statistical software SPSS we found out that the difference is statistically important. On the basis of these findings we can safely say that practice and orthoepy can greatly improve proper pronunciation.
