Abstract:Danes si pouka brez uporabe informacijsko-komunikacijske tehnologije (v nadaljevanju: IKT) skoraj ne znamo več predstavljati. Učiteljem smo predstavili štiri različne merilnike srčnega utripa različnih proizvajalcev: (i) merilnik proizvajalca Vernier (v nadaljevanju Vernier), (ii) merilnik proizvajalca Biopac (v nadaljevanju Biopac), (iii) pametno športno uro proizvajalca Samsung (v nadaljevanju pametna športna ura) in (iv) Fingerbeeper.

Title:Using heart rate sensors in elementary school
Abstract:Nowadays, it is impossible to imagine school lessons without using information-communication technology (ICT). ICTs are defined differently in literature, covering everything from computers, e-tablets, interactive tables, Internet, smart phones, as well as various digital meters that can be used at school for laboratory work. One of the digital meters used at school is a heart rate monitor. Heart rate gives us an insight into the functioning of the human body, more precisely in the functioning of the heart, so it is desirable that students at the elementary level learn how to measure the heart rate and to interpret the results. In the Master's thesis, we conducted a study with elementary school biology teachers with specific objectives: (i) do teachers use heart rate monitors or do they perform an analogue (manual) count of heart rate, (ii) which heart rate monitors are used during courses. We presented four different heart rate sensors to the teachers: (i) monitor manufactured by Vernier (hereinafter referred to as Vernier), (ii) monitor manufactured by Biopac (hereinafter referred to as Biopac), (iii) the Samsung smart watch (hereinafter smart watch) and (iv) Fingerbeeper. These heart rate monitors were tested by teachers. Each of them has some advantages as well as some disadvantages. The Vernier and Biopac manufacturers are part of the system, which consists of a central device and connectors. The use of such systems requires a relatively complex and precise compilation of several pieces of equipment and settings in program windows, which can be a difficult task for students. The wrist watch for measuring heart rate is easier to use. However, it can still exceed the allowed financial scope of the school, especially if it is used for this purpose only. Within the funding directive "The Creative Path to Knowledge" (PKP) 2016/2017, financed by the Public Fund of the Republic of Slovenia for Personnel Development and Scholarship, a project entitled "Development and Validation of a Pulse Plethysmograph for Applications in Education, Research and Clinical Practice « was funded within which a simple and affordable heart rate sensor was developed, which is precisely comparable to more demanding sensors, but is at the same time priced more accessible than the other three measured sensors. After presenting and testing the sensors, the teachers gave an opinion on which of the sensors they found most suitable for use in elementary school practice by completing the questionnaire. In our study, we found that more than half of teachers in elementary school currently use a manual (analogue) count of heart rate measurement (58.2%). Measurement with heart rate sensors is considerably less (42.8%). In our results, the teachers found the Biopac and Vernier sensors most reliable, they found the most exciting the lessons with a sports watch. Providing that the school would finance a heart rate monitor, the teachers would suggest to buy the Fingerbeeper sensor. We have checked if there are any statistical differences in answers regarding gender, age and teachers professional title. They showed up in the age of teachers, and according to gender and title there were no statistical differences.
