Abstract:

Title:
Use of assertive communication to solve conflicts in nursing
Abstract:
Starting points, purpose: Assertive communication or assertiveness is one of the most important skills that nurses have at their workplace, because it reduces everyday tension, resolves conflicts, builds effective relations among health care teams and ensures quality health care. The aim of the degree paper is to present assertive communication, describe its purpose in health care and to find out its usage in solving conflicts in health care. Research methods: Descriptive and quantitative research methods have been used in our research for this degree paper. The results were acquired with a structured questionnaire. The survey consisted of 50 randomly chosen qualified nurses or health care technicians who work in surgery or in nursing homes. The results were processed and graphically presented with programs such as Excel 2013, Microsoft Office Word 2013 and IBM SPSS Statistics 22. Results: From 50 interviewees, 46 (92%) were females and 4 (8%) were males. We have found out that the majority of interviewees, which is 31 (62%), are overloaded. Despite the overload, 41 (82%) of them are assertive. We have also found out that assertiveness does not change from one field of work to the other. Discussion and conclusion: We can establish the fact that health care workers are very well familiar with assertiveness and that they also quite often use it. We believe that regular assertiveness courses in the clinical environment could help elevate health care standards, resolve conflicts, improve interpersonal relations and achieve a higher level of satisfaction among workers in health care. Patients would also gladly appreciate all mentioned.
