Title:Translation of stylistic elements in the collection of stories "Winnie-the-Pooh"
Abstract:Translating children's literature may sound as a simple task but it is actually a considerable challenge. In particular, when a translator has to transfer the author’s style, keeping in mind the target audience. “Winnie-the-Pooh” contains numerous puns, wordplays and neologisms as distinctive stylistic devices. The most frequently used devices are wordplay and nonce words. Recreating this effect in the target text requires not only knowledge of the source language and culture but also a creative approach from the translator. In the theoretical part of the thesis, the main characteristics of children’s literature and literary style are presented with a primary focus on translations of wordplay and nonce words. The empirical part consists of a comparison between the source text and the translations made by Majda Stanovnik in 1965 and 2007. The aim of the thesis is to prove that translating a playful language and transferring its effect demands a skilled, inventive, and experienced translator. Moreover, translating children’s literature is not as easy and sometimes even more demanding than translating adult literature.
Keywords:children’s literature, literary style, wordplay, literary translation, translating wordplay, nonce words, translating nonce words.
