Abstract:V Diplomskem delu smo se ukvarjali s primerjavo konceptov smrti in umiranja pri Platonu in Sogyal Rinpocheju. Skozi pregled stališč mnogih starejših (nezahodnih) tradicij smo najprej raziskali pojmovanje in razumevanje smrti in umiranja, ter duhovne tradicije, iz katerih ta pojmovanja izhajajo. Nato smo opisali temeljne pojme Tibetanske duhovnosti oz natančneje Tibetanske knjige življenja in umiranja, avtorja Sogyala Rinpocheja in pokazali na problematiko razlage tega dela.

Title:THE PROBLEM OF DEATH AND DYING IN PLATO AND SOYGAL RINPOCHE
Abstract:The thesis discusses the comparison of concepts of death and dying according to Plato and Sogyal Rinpoche. With an overview of aspects of many older (non-western) traditions we first researched the comprehension and understanding of death, dying and spiritual tradition from which this comprehension originates. Next we described the western comprehension of death and dying and shown the problems of the description of western concepts. The following part describes the fundamental terms of the Tibetan spirituality or more accurately the Tibetan book of life and dying from the author Sogyal Rinpoche and shows the problems regarding the explanation of this work. We also showed the parallels, differences and problems of the comparison of the two works and concluded with a short suggestion of a pragmatic “argument” or the path towards the existence of an afterlife in the tradition of Tomaž Akvinski. We reviewed the meaning of testimonies regarding the near death experiences, finished with a problematic conclusion and indicated the possibility and need for further, deepened philosophical work, which along with new aspects could also bring utilitaristic benefits for both east and west, without the need to sacrifice the loyalty towards spiritual traditions or the criteria of scientific research. We attempted to show that the philosophical method of argument analysis and the comparison of concepts can serve as a bridge between the fields of science and spirituality.
