Abstract:Atwood’s main linguistic tool in presenting the dystopian world of Oryx and Crake is creating new words. They are used to depict the deterioration of language as a metaphor or even proof of a gradually decaying society and a vital component of the novel and this is why we focused our analysis of the translation by Alenka Moder Saje on how she dealt with this particular translating problem. We determined which techniques she used according to Vermes and critically assessed her solutions by analysing them according to Kitty van Leuven-Zwart’s model of translation shifts. The microstructural analysis of the translation focuses on neologisms and proper names. We also reviewed neologisms, how they are created and what the proposed translating techniques are. As expected, a microstructural analysis revealed many translation shifts, yet we determined that these specific translating challenges were mostly suitably met.
