Abstract:

Title:
Impact of production systems on yield and quality of tomato
Abstract:
The production systems (PS) can have a significant impact on the yield and quality of tomato, the world’s most important vegetable. In 2015, a field experiment was conducted on a sustainable experimental field, owned by the Faculty of Agriculture and Life Sciences in Pivola, which studied the impact of PS (organic, biodynamic, integrated and conventional) on the yield and quality (the contents of sugar, vitamin C, nitrates and nitrites) of two tomato cultivars ('Jani' and 'Amaneta F1'). Each treatment was provisioned in accordance with the requirements of a particular PS and good agricultural practice. In the conventional (56.71 t ha-1) and biodynamic (53.98 t ha-1) PS the total weight of the yield is the highest, while as far as the market yield is concerned, there are no differences between the conventional (37.58 t ha-1), biodynamic (36.77 t ha-1), integrated (31.43 t ha-1) and organic (27.13 t ha-1) PS. The highest sugar content is in the biodynamic (4.92 oBx) and organic (4.88 oBx) PS. The lowest nitrate content is in the organic (42.67 mg kg-1) and integrated (44.33 mg kg-1) PS. The two cultivars differ in the total and market weight of the yield, as well as in the contents of sugar and vitamin C, in favour of the cultivar 'Amaneta F1', which also accumulates less nitrates than the cultivar 'Jani'. The confirmed impacts of the production systems on the studied parameters can represent a solid basis for deciding which PS will be selected for the production of tomato. In terms of quality, the less intensive PS have a priority.
