Abstract:Teoretična izhodišča: V diplomskem delu smo opisali zlatenico pri novorojenčku, vzrok nastanka, njene značilnosti, vrste in zdravljenje. Na podlagi zbranih podatkov smo preverili, kako dobro matere poznajo zlatenico in njene znake, kje dobijo največ informacij in kateri so najpogostejši negovalni problemi mater otrok z zlatenico.

Title:The role of the nurse in treatment of newborns with jaundice
Abstract:Theoretical part: In the paper we describe newborn jaundice, what causes it, its characteristics, types and treatment. We present the role of nurses treating jaundice at neonatology and four main concepts based on the theory of Virginia Henderson. According to the data collected, we checked how well are mothers familiar with jaundice and its symptoms, where they get most information, and which are the most common problems in nursing children with jaundice. Researh methodology: The data were collected using a questionnaire with 25 questions (21 close-ended questions and 4 semi-open). The survey was conducted in August 2016 at the Department of Perinatology at University Medical Center (UKC) Maribor among mothers whose newborns had jaundice. The study included 30 mothers. Results: We wanted to find out what mothers know about jaundice and its symptoms, whether they got all the necessary information about it, and if they felt any pressure due to their newborns' illness. We realize that mothers are well informed about jaundice and that they receive most information before giving birth from medical personnel. The results show that mothers are not destressed about jaundice and that their newborns are properly treated. Conclusion: Jaundice is the most common state in newborns and it calls for all possible attendance of both, parents and medical workers. We are aware that early detection of the illness is crucial, besides organizing medical educative programmes for parents in order to cooperate closely and gain their trust.
