Abstract:Diplomsko delo obravnava problem alkoholizma in protialkoholni boj po prvi svetovni vojni do konca tretjega desetletja 20. stoletja. V obravnavanem obdobju so nastajale protialkoholne organizacije. Matična organizacija s sedežem v Ljubljani se je imenovala Sveta vojska in je izdajala protialkoholne časopise: Prerod, Mladi junak in Našo bodočnost. Imeli so namen nravno preroditi slovenski narod.

Title:"DYNAMITE-ALCOHOL AND ANTI-DYNAMITE - ABSTINENCE" THE ANTI-ALCOHOL FIGHT IN SLOVENIA IN THE THIRD DECADE OF THE 20TH CENTURY
Abstract:The diploma thesis deals with the problem of alcoholism and the anti-alcohol fight after the First World War to the end of the third decade of the 20th century. The purpose of the thesis is to demonstrate how the problem of alcoholism was tackled by the Catholic moralists, who were later joined by other bourgeois layers, such as doctors, teachers, criminologists and anthropologists. The thesis is trying to show how the society in that time imagined the problem of alcoholism and what relationship they had towards alcoholics. After the First World War, after the initial silence, drinking becomes even more widespread. Anti-alcohol fight, led by Catholic moralists, had begun to lose power. Gradually, the battle was joined by health care, until it took over after the Second World War. In the 20th century, finally prevailed the realization that an alcoholic is a patient who needs to be treated. In this period the anti-alcohol organisations were built. The parent organisation based in Ljubljana was named the Holy army and it issued anti-alcohol newspapers: Prerod (Revival), Mladi junak (Young hero) and Naša bodočnost (Our future). The makers of Prerod (Prerodovci) have set themselves a goal to fight against drinking, cruelty and debauchery. They had the intention to morally renew the Slovenian nation. Anti-alcohol warriors were convinced that adult alcoholics are impossible to change, so they turned to the youth. They felt that young people are more susceptible for anti-alcohol instruction. Solutions were also seen in women, which need to be properly educated, so that they could have a favourable effect on children and husband. The solution was seen also in the adoption of anti-alcohol laws, which was not in the interest of the state leaders, because a lot of the money of sold alcohol flowed into the budget. In their eyes, alcoholism was causing serious damage to the economy and the family in the form of violence. Under the influence of alcohol many crimes were committed. Alcoholics were inferior to the society, and all the following generations were degenerated because they were convinced that the bad material is inherited to future generations. By anthropologists, doctors and criminologists the solution was seen in eugenics, according to which, with specific methods (abortion, sterilization) they would achieve physical and mental health of the nation, but the method did not work in Slovenia.
