Abstract:

Title:
Knowledge of Bicycles Used as a Means of Transport in the 5th Grade of Elementary School
Abstract:
The master’s thesis Knowledge of Bicycles Used as a Means of Transport in the 5th Grade of Elementary School is comprised of the theoretical and empirical part. In the theoretical part we present in detail the bicycle as a means of transportation, the history of the bicycle, its components, various types of bicycles, mandatory and optional equipment and also offer criteria that is to be taken into consideration when buying a bicycle and advices on how to maintain and ride it. We have analysed the curriculum for the teaching of natural sciences and technology in the fifth grade from the standpoint of bicycles and found that although students take a cycling exam, this content is not covered in the curriculum. We also examined and analysed the textbooks for the teaching of natural sciences and technology in the 4th and 5th grade of elementary school and described the process how students get their cycling licence. In the empirical part we present the results of the empirical research we carried out on the sample of a hundred and twelve 5th graders from Murska Sobota that have taken a bicycling exam in 2014. We found that the survey participants have high knowledge about bicycles and safe traffic integration and that they also use it in practise.
