Title:Child tonsillectomy
Abstract:With children we often encounter recurrent tonsillitis and tonsillar hypertrophy, which can resolve in a tonsillectomy. Tonsillectomy is a surgical procedure to remove enlarged tonsils. The surgery itself is very painful and stressful for children and their parents. It is very important to inform and prepare the parents with enough information on how to prepare their child for hospitalization and the surgery. It is necessary to take care of the children's well being and the feeling of safety while hospitalized, as well as to include the parents in all the activites of health care. We need to give them instructions on how to take care of the children, once they have been released from the hospital. The purpose of this thesis was to present the process of work of a nurse, working with children undergoing tonsillectomy. With a research, at the department of otorhinolaryngology in one of the general hospital in Slovenia, we found out how a nurse cares for children before and after surgery and how the nurse communicates with the children's parents. We used quantitative methodology of work with a questionnaire of open and closed type, which was distributed to 16 employees. With a questionnaire we found out, that a nurse takes care for children before and after the surgery with a quality care, and spends a lot of time with children's parents. The most common problems that a nurse faces while taking care of the children are spoiled children and vomiting; parents not obeying the instructions and children not wanting to eat. It is important that the parents are well educated on all the activities of health care, because that helps the children to better cooperate while being taken care of.
