To nam omogoča komunikacijska vrlina empatija. Uporabili smo vprašalnik zaprtega tipa, pripravljen v namen raziskave.

Title:THE IMPORTANCE OF EMPATHY IN TREATMENT OF PATIENTS IN THE INTENSIVE CARE UNIT
Abstract:Theoretical background: Intensive care unit patients are in critical condition, therefore it is necessary to know how to establish a proper way of communication. Communication of a nurse has to be professional but also sympathetic. Communication virtue empathy enables us to do so. Empathy is a capability and a process, through which we try to put ourselves in the position and feelings of someone else and to look on the situation from another person’s perspective. Aim of this research was to determine how many nurses, employed in intensive care units, use empathy when communicating with patients. Research methodology: The study is based on quantitative methodology. We used a closed type questionnaire, prepared for the purpose of research. In this survey 57 nurses, employed in departments of anaesthesiology, intensive care, pain management and intensive internal medicine of Univerzitetni klinični center Maribor were participating. Results: Results of this survey show, that participants of the survey familiar with empathy and consider it as an important element of communication (N=57; 100 %). Communication with empathy is used by 41 (73 %) of participants, 12 (21 %) use it only occasionally and 4 (7 %) of participating nurses do not use the element of empathy when communicating with patients at all. We discovered that participants of this survey have different opinions on the most expressed factor for implementation of empathic communication. Conclusion: This study shows, that employees of the intensive therapy unit are familiar with empathy and consider it as a vital element of communication. They realise that empathy helps them to understand the position, condition, feelings and thinking of their patients. Furthermore we also discovered that empathy could be used to a greater extent, due to the fact that intensive care unit patients are in critical condition and are therefore in need of a proper way of communication, encouragement, smile, understanding, respect.
