Title:THE IMPORTANCE OF PHYSICAL CONTACT WITH A PRE-SCHOOL-AGE CHILD
Abstract:Our needs differ as people differ from each other. Some people have bigger needs than others, however, we all have to satisfy them in order to establish a normal life process. According to their significance, Abraham Maslow classified hierarchy of needs as a pyramid. The most basic needs are found at the bottom of the pyramid; the first being physiological needs, followed by the needs for safety, belonging, esteem and self-actualization. In order to achieve the top of the pyramid, our needs should be satisfied gradually. When the most important need is satisfied, a higher need emerges. People differ from each other in both – their needs and their attachment development. Some develop a safe attachment, others a non-safe one. John Bowlby, the pioneer in research of attachment development, believes that a baby develops its attachment only to one person – its mother. The child's first attachment is developed towards his parents, and only later in his development towards other people such as pre-school teachers whom he meets when he starts attending a kindergarten. Parents' opinion about the frequency and importance of physical contact with their child, and between a kindergarten teacher and their child was researched through a questionnaire carried out in all units of Studenci kindergarten. A hundred questionnaires were analysed. My findings are the following: the first and third hypothesis can be confirmed, however, the second hypothesis can be only partly confirmed.
