Abstract:The aim of this work was to characterize the microstructure of horizontally continuously cast Ni-based superalloy GMR 235 (bar with 50 mm diameter) in order to get an insight into the processes taking place during continuous casting. The microstructure consisted of γ-matrix (Ni-rich solid solution) with γ’-Ni3(Al, Ti) precipitates. In addition, there were predominantly, in the interdendritic regions, also the following phases: MC-carbide, M3B2-borideand Ti(C, N)-carbonitride. Their size, morphology and distribution were dependent on local solidification conditions. The areas around the primary and secondary witness marks were investigated in detail enabling us to understand the processes taking place during the formation of the solid skin upon solidification. This knowledge is critical for optimisation of the process parameters in order to make the continuous casting process more reliable and to obtain the required properties.
