Title:TRANSLATING CULTURE-BOUND ELEMENTS IN THE NOVEL THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA
Abstract:Translation is considered as a process of transferring the meaning from the source language into the target language, while numerous other factors shall be taken into account. One of these factors is also culture, a crucial part of any society. The translator’s task is to bridge the gap between different cultures and to connect the source and target languages. To overcome cultural differences successful, a translator should have an excellent knowledge of culture of both the source and the target language and to be able to choose the most appropriate strategy for translating these differences. In this graduation thesis a special emphasize is put on literary translation and its potential influence on the target language. Theoretical part focuses on the problematic of translating culture-specific elements and translation strategies which can be used to overcome cultural differences. The empirical part constitutes a comparative analysis of the original and the translation of the novel The Devil Wears Prada, focusing on the differences between the Slovene and American cultures. We analysed the translation strategies by which these cultural differences can be overcome and what kind of translation solutions the translator Urška Willewaldt decided for.
