Abstract:

Title:
ANALYSIS OF POSSIBILITIES FOR PEACH (Prunus persica L.) DISEASE CONTROL WITHOUT USE OF COPPER BASED PESTICIDES
Abstract:
A three-year field trial (2011, 2012 and 2013) was conducted to determine the consequences of excluding copper fungicides from spray programs for control of fungal diseases of peach in organic and integrated peach production. Four types of spray programs were compared: an organic spray program based on sulfur, acid clay and carbonate preparations (ECO), ECO + copper products (ECOCu), an integrated spray program based on organic fungicides (ziram, cyprodnil, penconazol, dodin, fenhexamid, etc.) (INT) and INT + copper products (INTCu). The efficacy of the spray programs for control of diseases caused by Taphrina deformans, Clasterosporium carpophillum, Monila sp., Phomopsis amygdali, Sphaerotheca pannosa and Colletotrichum gloeosporioides was assessed by standard EPPO methods using visual disease rate scoring and efficacy calculation according to the Abbot formula. The efficacy for disease control decreased following the exclusion of copper products from the spray programs. The only exception was powdery mildew. The results of the trial show that copper fungicides play an irreplaceable role in managing peach diseases and their long-term exclusion can cause a significant increase in the infective potential of the studied diseases and a decline in peach tree yielding capacity. Since currently copper fungicides cannot be excluded from spray programs, completely new copper fungicide formulations exhibiting efficacy at much lower rates per hectare are needed to ensure good disease control until equally efficient alternative fungicides are developed and available on the market.
