Title:FAIRYTALE CURRICULUM AND MULTICULTURAL EDUCATION
Abstract:The term multiculturalism defines the relationships between different cultural groups. It is becoming more and more common in the contemporary world, and therefore, introduction of multicultural education into schools and raising the children's awareness of multiculture are crutial, because only in this way the young people will be able to understand the life of others and concurrently overcome the obstacles of prejudice towards members of different cultures. In this master's thesis, we sought to answer, whether fourth grade students in primary school become acquainted with Arab countries and their culture by discussing the collection of Arabic fairy tales called One Thousand and One Nights or Arabian Nights, and whether this changes their views on Arab culture and influences their prejudice. For discussion of the Arab fairy tales from One Thousand and One Nights with the fourth grade students, we used the reading in instalments method. We also watched a video of The Thief of Bagdad puppet show. We analysed the interviews and established that by discussing these fairy tales, the students had familiarized themselves with Arab culture and their way of life, and thus changed their views and opinions that were already formed before the discussion of fairy tales and were mainly based only on negative prejudice.
Keywords:Multiculture, prejudice, multicultural education, Arab countries, fairy tale curriculum, fairy tale, One Thousand and One Nights or Arabian Nights, The Thief of Bagdad.
