Title:“ALICE'S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND”: TRANSLATION OF WORDPLAYS AND CULTURE-SPECIFIC ELEMENTS
Abstract:Translating children's literature is a unique challenge, especially if it contains a number of culture-specific elements and wordplays. Since the aim is to recreate the purpose of the source text, excellent knowledge of the source and target culture, as well as the ingenuity of the translator are needed for a functional translation. This study aims to present the translation strategies that were used in the translation of culture-specific elements and wordplays in "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" (Lewis Carroll, 1994). The source text contains many allusions to the Victorian era and culture, as well as numerous wordplays. Theoretical part contains a presentation of the translation of children's literature, culture-specific elements and wordplays, as well as translation strategies of different authors, which were used during the analysis. The basis of the empirical section is a comparative analysis among the original, the translation by Bogo Pregelj (1951) and two translations by Gitica Jakopin (1969, 2011). Pregelj has created a distinctly more domesticated translation, in which a number of elements from the Victorian culture were replaced with elements from the target culture. Gitica Jakopin used strategies that we can classify as foreignized. She preserved the educational function of the text, as the reader can learn about Victorian culture. In all three translations wordplays are mostly replaced by wordplays from the target language.
