Abstract:
Rezultati.

Title:
ATTITUDES AND KNOWLEDGE OF HEALTH PROFESSIONALS IN PALLIATIVE CARE
Abstract:
Theoretical basis. Palliative care is a branch, which improves the quality of patient’s life and the lives of his close relatives, who are confronting with incurable disease. Research methodology. Quantitative methodology has been used accompanied with a questionnaire containing a five-level Likert scale of standpoint measurements. Partly standardised questionnaire has been summarized and customised according to our needs. It involved 13 semi-structured (open-type) and one structured (closed type) question. One hundred employees (doctors, registered nurses) from primary and secondary level of health care in Koroška region have participated in the research. The research results have been processed with Microsoft Office Word 2010, Microsoft Office Excel 2010 and IBM SPSS Statistics 20. Results. It is evident from the research that the vast majority of health professionals encounter incurably ill patients or dying patients in their work, however their education in palliative care is inadequate. Most of health professionals need or want organised palliative care and with a proper education they are ready to accept new competences and responsibilities in executing palliative care. Conclusion. The research shows that the majority of health professionals gained knowledge of palliative care through practice. Additionally only one's own experiences are insufficient in palliative care and the care of incurably ill and dying patients requires proper education. The awareness of the need for professional knowledge in palliative care in the entire health care system is very important for resolving this current issue.
